Abstract: Anchored in international human rights frameworks and India’s legal context, this report produced by the Aapti Institute, titled “Understanding Generative Artificial Intelligence’s Implications on Gender Using a Value Chain Approach and a UNGP Lens”underscores the disproportionate harms faced by women and gender minorities, including exclusion, discrimination, and violence. Recommendations include fostering inclusive data collection, gender-sensitive AI training, robust red-teaming, and policy guardrails. The report provides practical tools, such as risk assessment toolkits for businesses and a policy brief for governments, urging collaborative action to “un-risk” GenAI by embedding equity, transparency, and accountability across its lifecycle.
CDF co-founder Nidhi Sudhan is among the experts who contributed to this report. The report identifies risks across three stages of GenAI development: dataset preparation (e.g., erasure of gender minorities, lack of inclusive data practices), modeling (e.g., biased design assumptions, insufficient gender diversity in AI workforce), and deployment (e.g., perpetuation of stereotypes, deepfake-enabled harassment).
